This article examines the San Antonio Highway commercial strip of Laredo, Texas, an important tourist and trade-related gateway to Mexico. It traces the evolution of the strip from its beginnings in the 1930s, when tourist courts and filling stations appeared at the city's edge, through the 1940s, when a major filling-in of businesses geared largely to tourists and financed largely by non
